Kenn Burrola
Kenn Burrola, DJing since the early days of 1981, was one of the original DJs to bring the sound of ‘Ol Skool’ to Salt Lake City, Utah clubs, events and parties. Starting out spinning artists and groups such as The Barkays, Zap Band, Cameo, The Jonzun Crew, Felix & Jarvis, UTFO, DJ Red Alert, Whodini and of course The Soul Sonic Forces, etc. With making and passing out several mix tapes a week to people throughout Salt Lake City and surrounding areas and throwing house parties, events; spinning and networking at local clubs, Kenn Burrola became one of the hottest and best known DeeJay’s in Salt Lake City. Joining the Army in 1987 to serve his country, Kenn Burrola was stationed at Fort Drum, NY. While serving in the Army, Kenn Burrola continued to DeeJay on base, in Watertown and Syracuse, New York. During that time, Kenn Burrola was also DeeJaying in Manhattan, NY, which is where he got his first taste of “House Music”… and the love affair started. Although he never stopped spinning the Ol Skool sound, House music just took over what he predominately played out at parties and clubs, such as The Pumphouse, Suburban Park, Club 1018, Club 37, The Tunnel, The Roxy, and The Warehouse in Syracuse & Manhattan, NY. Those were definitely some phenomenal times. While living in New York, meeting some artists and DJs such as Ten City, Julian “Jumpin” Perez, Todd Terry, Mr. Lee, David Morales, Junior Vasquez were very inspirational. Moving back to Salt Lake City, Utah in 1995 started a whole new experience as Salt Lake was still behind in times when it came to the House Music sound. On the radio, there was a mixshow “The Vibe” with a DJ by the name of Shawn Phillips, who later became good friends with Kenn. During 1995 and 1997, Kenn Burrola played at a variety of clubs and events (raves), guest spotted several times on “The Vibe” and also networked in getting name recognition for quality sets. In January 1997, a friend from Kenns earlier days, Sam Smith was doing “Sounds Of A Party” an urban radio show on KRCL 90.9 FM and mentioned to Kenn that he should see about getting on board to do a show. So in 1997, ‘Liquid Rhythms Mixshow’ was born and hasn’t looked back since. With the sounds that Kenn Burrola was mixing on Liquid Rhythms and the guest DJs that were on the show, Liquid Rhythms blew up! Over the years, Kenn Burrola and Liquid Rhythms have continually become known around the USA and internationally. Being able to guest spot on Galaxy 105 FM (London), Media Services’ 80 Proof FM (New York and London) among other radio stations and internet stations; spinning at several clubs in Denver, Miami (Winter Music Conference), New York, Connecticut, Chicago and several other states has been a great experience. As far as Spinning ‘House’, Kenn Burrola has a Jekyll & Hyde to him… One side; the deep, soulful, funky, filtered sound and then the dark side… tough, gritty electro, acid, progressive and tribal sound. But he never forgets it’s all about pleasing the ladies on the dancefloor. Keep them on the floor begging for more, and you’re guaranteed to have a successful night. With the demise of “The Vibe” a few years back, Liquid Rhythms became and still IS the only ‘all’ underground dance oriented mixshow Salt Lake City has to offer. Always bringing the most upfront and exclusive tracks provided by 1000’s of record labels, producers, remixers and fellow DJs in the underground and commercial house scene. Along with several years of experience as a club and events DJ, Kenn Burrola has kept close ties to the international dance music industry, charted and reviewed records for industry magazines such as FMQB, Dance Music Authority (DMA), URB, Mixmag, DJ Mag and many others. Kenn Burrola has also worked and DJ’d with some of the biggest names in the industry, to include: Roger Sanchez, Harry “Choo Choo” Romero, Satoshi Tomiie, Afrika Bambaataa, Mantroix, MC Tee, Beastie Boys, Louie Vega, Kenny Dope, DJ Sneak, Georgie Porgie, Xavier Joshua, Maurice Joshua, Bad Boy Bill, Richard “Humpty” Vission, DJ Pope, DJ Oji, DJ Dove, DJ Icey, Jesse Saunders, Johnny De Mario, Jellybean, DJ Dan, Frankie Knuckles, Swedish Eagle, Groove Junkies, Richie Hawtin, DJ Midi-Mac, Paul Oakenfold, Tony B, Lady D, Richard F, DJ Disciple, Erick Morillo, Bear Who, David 'Chicago' Casto, Frankie Bones, Todd Terry, Clivilles & Cole, Shannon, Johnny O, Cynthia, The Cover Girls, Ice Cube, Naughty By Nature, Sybil, Lisa Stansfield, Digital Underground, Das EFX, A Tribe Called Quest, Oscar G, Sharam and many others. Liquid Rhythms continues to grow and doesn’t plan on slowing down anytime soon and in 2010, will be on the air for 13 years, which will make it one of the longest running mixshows on the air nationally and/or internationally!! You can hear Kenn Burrola on Liquid Rhythms every Friday night / Saturday morning from 1:00 am to 4:00 am on KRCL 90.9 FM or at www.krcl.org. And at the many local and out of state club and events he still continues to DeeJay at. “Do What You Want, Just Be Good At It!!”
Acid House, Dutch House, Electro House... Can you stand it??!! The roof has been blown off!!
A combination of some serious progressive house sounds with some electro and minimal techno tracks weaved in for that harder edged feeling.
